Archive for February 2026Do I Need Brake Service? (Brake Service)Posted February 22, 2026 12:00 PMThink of how many times you put your foot on your vehicle’s brake pedal every day. And think of how much you rely on your brakes to slow down and stop your momentum. When it comes to safety systems, your brakes are at the top of the list, and that’s why it’s so important to keep them in top condition. Brakes are something you make sure you keep maintained before they start showing signs of problems. Some of those signs are a grinding sound when you step on the brake pedal, your vehicle pulling to one side when you brake, you don’t feel your brakes stopping you as quickly as they used to, or you notice the brake light is illuminated on your instrument panel. We ask a lot of our brakes. They have to work no matter how hot or cold it is outside. That means whether it’s sunny, snowing, raining, or icy; you’re traveling at highway speeds or school-zone speeds; or when suddenly you find yourself trying to avoid hitting another vehicle, animal, person, or obstacle in the road. They have to work on smooth or rough pavement. When you bring your vehicle in to us for brake service, we will first inspect your brakes and all the parts in the system. Our technician will closely check all the components for wear, deterioration, and corrosion. We’ll check fluids, bushings, seals, and other components and make recommendations for what should be replaced or repaired to keep the system in top condition. We’ll recommend quality parts that meet your vehicle manufacturer’s specifications. We want to make sure your vehicle’s brakes are doing for you what they are designed to do. Spring Street Automotive Inc Not-So-Common Sense (Sensor Failures)Posted February 15, 2026 12:00 PMSo your vehicle won't start. What's the first thing that comes to mind? Battery dead? Starter motor worn out? Out of gas? Well, those are all reasons that make sense. But your vehicle may be refusing to start because one of its computers is being warned that to do so might damage it. Here's how that works. You have lots of computers in your vehicle. They need to know the status of things so there are several sensors monitoring various things going on. These sensors send information to the computers that adjust the fuel and air mixture so you don't waste fuel. They know when things aren't quite right and prevent you from starting your engine if that's going to damage it. Other sensors make sure the coolant is the right temperature, check to see you are not polluting the air and make sure other electronic components are performing their tasks correctly. Here's an example of a sensor doing its job. Your engine needs oil to lubricate metal components so the friction doesn't damage them. Your engine has an oil pressure sensor that tells a computer called the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) if things are good to go or if there's something wrong, maybe the oil pressure is too low to keep things lubricated. If it is, it gives a signal for the vehicle not to start, protecting the engine. Of course, the sensors can go bad, too, with some of the same results. And so someone has to figure out if it's the sensor that's failed or if it really has detected a problem. That is the challenge for technicians with specialized equipment to decipher the signs. If a bad sensor is found, it may need to be replaced. Sometimes a thorough cleaning can do the trick. In either case, your service facility can track down the problem and get you back on the road. Makes sense, doesn't it? Spring Street Automotive Inc A Honking Big Jam (Stuck Horn)Posted February 8, 2026 12:00 PMAt one time or another, most drivers honk their horn at someone who might be texting at a stoplight or not paying attention when they're driving. But what happens when you tap on your horn and all of a sudden it won't quit? Everyone's looking at you like you're an angry jerk and all you want to do is turn it off! It helps to know the basics of what's happening when you honk your horn. There's a switch in the steering wheel, of course, and when you press on it, it sends power to a relay which then energizes the horn. Bingo. Sound. When the horn sticks on, one of these parts or the wiring has developed a problem. With the ear-splitting noise inside your cabin, it may be hard to keep your cool, but do your best to stay calm. Try pushing the horn several times; it may un-stick the switch if you're lucky. If not, there are a couple of things you can try. First, if you can, pull your vehicle off the road and into a spot where you're not disrupting traffic. If you feel comfortable rummaging around in your vehicle's fuse box, you might be able to pull the fuse that manages the circuit for your horn system. A hint: the fuse boxes sometimes have a label inside showing which fuse goes to which part of the vehicle. Find the fuse that goes to the horn and pull it out (sometimes there's a fuse-pulling tool inside the fuse box). But many people don't feel like tackling that. Yes, you can drive over to a service facility with the horn blaring (not the best idea). Or call your service facility and see if they might be able to send someone over to where you are so they can shut off the horn. At the shop, a technician can check wiring, switches, relays and other components to find out what's wrong. This is something that should be left to a professional for a couple of reasons. First, repairs around the steering wheel can involve airbags. Second, some horn components may be part of a vehicle's alarm system. The bad news is that your horn may not give you any warning before it starts blaring uncontrollably. But the good news is that a horn doesn't malfunction all that often, and now you have a plan if it does. Spring Street Automotive Inc Don?t Be Hosed (Radiator Hose Replacement)Posted February 1, 2026 12:00 PMIf you are like most drivers, you don’t worry too much about what shape your radiator hoses are in. But they are a vital part of your coolant system, helping carry engine coolant from the hot engine to where it is cooled off in the radiator. When the cooling system has a problem, you will likely see your vehicle’s temperature gauge showing you it’s running at a higher temperature than it usually does. Or maybe the low coolant light has come on. If either of these happens, it’s important that you not drive too long since a hot, running vehicle can suffer expensive damage quickly. Radiator hoses can be damaged by being subjected to temperature extremes, both hot and cold. In addition to the temperature gauge climbing or low coolant light illuminating, there are other clues that may tell you your vehicle is leaking fluid. You may notice a green, yellow, brown or purple fluid pooled on the ground around your vehicle. At any of these signs, it’s time to bring your vehicle in for service soon. A technician can inspect hoses for leaks, deformities and other problems, as well as looking for cracks and wear. They’ll also check the condition of the water pump, since problems with it can be another reason coolant will leak out from under your vehicle. It is better to periodically have your hoses checked rather than waiting until they fail. How often you should have yours replaced depends a lot on what vehicle you own, and in what conditions it is driven. Rubber degrades not only by temperature but also by what materials it comes in contact with. For example, oil leaking on a radiator hose can prematurely cause that hose to fail. Age is another factor. We recommend you have one of our technicians inspect your cooling system regularly so you don’t get “hosed” by a failure at an inconvenient time.
